A two-pack-a-day smoker myself, I vowed to quit smoking before I turned 30. And so, I also tried just about every reputable solution out there including nicotine patches, gum, going cold turkey, and waning off cigarettes in measured steps. Following the advice of a “Nicotine Counselor” I publicly admitted my nicotine addiction to family and friends and loudly proclaimed my upcoming “Quit Date”, but those dates came and went as I continued to repeatedly light up.
Less than a month away from my 30th birthday and feeling more like a doomed failure than a virile Marlboro man, I saw a back page notice in the Sunday newspaper about a Quit Smoking hypnosis clinic being held in a hotel conference room. Despite my skepticism, I decided to go.
There were a couple of dozen of us in attendance. A short, balding man in a rumpled suit finally appeared behind the lectern. Although his appearance didn’t inspire confidence, he spoke in a calm, confident manner. He explained the ABCs of Hypnosis and told us that during the course we would become more aware of the underlying causes of our addiction and what triggers the deadly habit. Moreover, if we committed to the four weekly sessions and followed his instructions, those among us who sincerely wanted to quit smoking would succeed.
As we departed from the first session there was a trash can next to the exit door, and nearly all of us were tossing our unfinished packs of cigarettes in the bin. I relapsed a couple of days later but kept using self-hypnosis. Several relapses later, I completed the final session and literally hurled my cigarettes into the exit trash bin. Since then I haven’t smoked or used any form of nicotine. At long last, that ugly monkey was off of my back. The freedom from bondage was exhilarating.
That was over 25 years ago. My doctor said that my lungs have healed without permanent damage. I am blissfully free of the deadly compulsion to smoke, although you can never let your guard down if you’ve been an addict. Nonetheless, I haven’t experienced tobacco cravings for nearly 25 years. Hypnosis may well have saved me from my aunt’s gruesome fate.
